This is more of a short story than a novel, and suitable for younger children who won’t be afraid of its gothic themes. I greatly enjoyed the simple story and lovely language, and find myself constantly amazed by Pullman’s ability to draw you swiftly into his worlds. This story has a dark overtone, with a lovely storybook structure. Because of the fairytale feeling, the characters aren’t particularly in depth, but it doesn’t suffer for that. |
