Shh.
The trick is to be as still as the shadow I resemble. Let their beating hearts calm. Let small minds flit away as I stand poised, one more incomprehensible piece of a world too large to understand. I am the end of everything. They will not see me coming.
The sun eats wisps of my drifting skin, and I feel her eyes on the back of my head, but I am focused on the rippling waves. This prize is for her. Watcher, she hungers; but she can only distract me now. I focus on the flickering shapes.
They do not see her, think her only a reflected cloud, an uncomfortable memory belonging to someone else.
Now they must forget me, too. I wait, one hand firmly gripping the edge of the stone wall, the other slightly raised, talons ready. When I strike it must be swift or my prey will escape.
A soft sound. She hungers.
I can’t wait much longer. Won’t. Any second now. Here, fishy, fishy, fishy.
